Inaugurated in 1970, with figures of the calibre of Aga Khan, the former king and queen of Spain, Juan Carlos and Sofía, the Hereditary Prince of Monaco and Grace Kelly, and Hugh Hefner in attendance, not to mention a performance by a young Julio Iglesias, Puerto Banús, Marbella, introduced itself to the world as a new marina concept, fusing Andalusian Mediterranean design with the latest innovations of the time.
In its design, besides offering the infrastructure typical of a marina, Puerto Banús would include a complete range of shops and services, including hotels, restaurants, cafés and fashion boutiques. This is still the case with the hotels you can find there today, which include Benabola Hotel and Apartments, Park Plaza Suites, Meliá Marbella Banús, Hotel PYR Marbella, Gran Hotel Guadalpin Banús and Hotel Blue Bay Banús.
Lining the streets that make up Puerto Banús, you’ll find some of the most prestigious fashion boutiques, including Louis Vuitton, Dior, Versace, Bvlgari, Dolce & Gabbana, Jimmy Choo, Gucci, Valentino and Cartier.
To help orientate you in this area, and properly show you the types of properties you can find in Puerto Banús, it’s useful to differentiate between the areas east and west of the port, and the central section that adjoins it.
In the east section, to the left as you enter Puerto Banús coming from Marbella and the Golden Mile, you’ll find residential apartment complexes, like La Alcazaba and Alcazaba Rio Verde, in the vicinity of Meliá Marbella Banús hotel, near the Rio Verde river. In this quiet area, the complexes enjoy large internal gardens, and sports facilities like Racket Club Los Granados, with its tennis and paddle-tennis courts.
At the beachfront in this area to the east of Puerto Banús, you’ll find complexes like Los Granados and Playa Rocío. These apartment complexes also have big internal gardens, and they’re just a stone’s throw from the coastal path that lines the beach, its chiringuito beach bars, and Cristamar shopping centre.
The central part of Puerto Banús is home to a wide range of services. These include superstores, restaurants with international cuisine, cafés, professional offices, high-end boutiques and luxury car rental services.
In this central area, besides the Andalusian-style apartments that border the port, there are complexes like Terrazas de Banús and Jardines del Puerto, which enjoy a privileged location, with a touch of the modern Mediterranean village, and pretty gardens. Nearby, the Marina Banús residential complex offers luxury apartments in the heart of Banús, opposite Plaza Antonio Banderas.
West of the port, as you leave it, on the left, you’ll find luxury residential complex Gray D’Albion, a frontline apartment complex. After that, there are further well-known Puerto Banús residential complexes, like Playas del Duque, built around extensive gardens, with three swimming pools and direct access to the beach and the frontline Ocean Club.
Surrounding the Playas del Duque complex are Las Gaviotas, Medina Garden and Andalucía del Mar apartment complexes.
In this area, west of the port, you’ll also find a series of frontline luxury villas, in Villa Marina.
Finally, the most westward section, near Gran Hotel Guadalpin Banús, is home to the Lorea Playa and Las Mimosas areas. This part is predominated by low-rise apartment buildings, such as Embrujo de Banús, Laguna de Banús, Ventura del Mar and Malibu, all of which have elegant designs and are just a stone’s throw from the beach.
