La Virginia urbanization is a complex made up of Andalusian-style townhouses at the start of the Marbella Golden Mile, in its northern section. It was created in the sixties, by Juan Manuel Figueras, Freddy Wildman and Donald Gray. The latter won the 2015 Rafael Manzano Architecture Prize for the design of this marvellous residential complex, where hidden corners, fountains and plants reign, to create a charming and welcoming Mediterranean setting.
To get to La Virginia, go to the end of Avenida Ricardo Soriano, Marbella, where the renowned Pirulí monument is located, and take Avenida Don Jaime de Mora. You can also get there from the A-7 motorway, exit 182.
The urbanization sits on a small hill and its structure, with cobbled streets adorned with cheerful flower pots and climbing plants, recreates a traditional Andalusian village. Spotless, with meticulous maintenance, here, arches and stairways open onto small squares, where peace and tranquillity reside.
The landscaping at La Virginia is a crucial part of its architecture. Years of exacting care, at the hands of its first gardener Antonio Gómez Rueda (whose name was given to a square in the urbanization to pay homage to his work and professionalism) created the result that visitors can appreciate and enjoy today. The current gardeners, José María Iglesias and José María Solano, won the 2011 Banús Foundation Gardening Club Award.
La Virginia is a gated urbanization with private access and security cameras. Its residents, who come from assorted sectors and include architects, doctors, artists, entrepreneurs and aristocrats among their number, form a diverse community, but one with a shared objective: to maintain high living standards in this idyllic place.
The urbanization has its own chapel, and two traditional restaurants can be found in its central streets: La Tienda and La Virginia. Both are pleasant places to stop and enjoy a bite to eat, in an unrivalled setting. There are also two parking areas for visitors, at the complex entrance and exit, with the internal spaces being reserved for residents.
The types of property you can find in La Virginia are village townhouses, built at different heights, and apartments, where some of the houses have been divided into two stories. There are also villas, located on the outskirts of this pretty, singular urbanization.
